A companion to the popular video,
Nature Neighborhood, this comprehensive teaching guide
helps you expand the walls of your classroom by turning your
property (at school or at home) into a "nature
neighborhood." Designed for hands-on learning experiences,
the "neighborhoods" provide the basic elements all
wildlife need: food, water, shelter, and places to raise young.
Detailed instructions show you how to create a mini-pond, bird
observation station, and butterfly garden. Developed by the
internationally recognized education staff of the North Carolina
Museum of Natural Sciences, the guide also suggests mini field
trips and activities that can be coordinated on existing school
grounds. A reference section points to teaching resources, field
guides, and sources for supplies, animals, and plants.
"There are fewer natural
areas for children to explore, and opportunities to enjoy
wildlife habitats are decreasing. . . . This well-organized
program gives enough information to motivate viewers to develop
a habitat in their area. It would be useful for those planning
school projects."---School Library Journal
